Redgate Test Data Manager

Redgate Test Data Manager prepares masked, subsetted database copies through Anonymize and Subsetter. It is a separate product from Redgate SQL Data Generator.

Sources reviewed

When should you consider it?

Consider it when you need smaller source-derived databases for development or QA, with a CLI-oriented preparation workflow. The documentation names SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and Oracle; verify the exact engine version.

Editorial fit assessment based on the sources below.

What are the limits?

Subsetting requires foreign-key relationships. Validate application-level relationships that are absent from the database schema. Use a dedicated disposable test environment. A masked copy still needs a separate privacy assessment; successful execution is not an anonymity guarantee.

What should the subset PoC verify?

Select two customers with related orders and payments. Assert no orphan records, the intended business cases, transformed identifiers and the complete output size. Repeat the pipeline, interrupt one run and test recovery. Export configuration and check which components and licenses remain necessary to run it. These are editorial criteria, not a benchmark.

Which capabilities are documented?

Synthetic generationNot verified
De-identification / maskingDocumented · source
Subsetting / subset planningDocumented · source
Data virtualizationNot verified
Seeded replay, scopedNot verified

Documented means a cited vendor source describes this scoped capability. Not verified means the reviewed evidence cannot establish it. Neither is a hands-on test result.

How is it deployed and licensed?

Official downloads provide Windows and Linux CLIs for anonymization and subsetting, plus a Windows GUI and a Linux GUI via Docker. Confirm installation requirements and database permissions for the selected component.

Documentation requires a license and offers a trial during authentication. The public product URL redirected to SQL Provision during this review; current commercial packaging and price must be confirmed with Redgate. This redirect alone does not establish retirement.

What should you verify in a proof of concept?

  1. Your database version, schema constraints and target formats.
  2. The exact product, edition, deployment and license entitlements.
  3. Your business assertions and the meaning of repeatability for your output.
  4. A failed run, cleanup and a repeat run on controlled inputs.
